High engine torque values improve engine lugging ability to momentarily sudden loads. It also improves overall tractor lugging ability or sustainability of the tractor for sudden heavy loads due to a change in soil properties.

Features of the John Deere engine
A specially designed piston spray jet system in the engine provides an oil spray below the piston. This unique design system provides continuous oil spray on the piston and helps dissipate excess heat, optimizing engine operating temperature and improving engine efficiency. The optimum engine operating temperature also enhances the life of critical engine parts and reduces maintenance costs.
When a vehicle exceeds a normal operating temperature, it begins to damage itself in many ways, including quick deterioration of the engine oil. This deterioration of engine oil lowers the engine performance and reduces the life of engine. This can lead to more consumption of oil and require frequent filling. This causes an increased need for checking engine oil level and an increase in the cost of operation.
An oil cooler system maintains the quality of oil for longer periods by lowering the working temperature of the oil. The lubrication oil passes through the oil cooler before being supplied to the engine components, which provides additional engine oil cooling for severe operating conditions.

The John Deere 5D Series offers a dry-type air filter with dual filter elements, which ensures clean air gets to the engine.

The John Deere 5D Series Tractor has inboard wet-disc brakes after planetary reduction. A higher brake disc contact area of 545 sq cm (84.5 sq in.) gives better braking efficiency and higher durability with effective heat dissipation due to the oil-immersed brake disc.
The brake pedals have a provision for a lock-to-operate braking system in transport or individually in field applications to facilitate a shorter turning radius.
With high-end features like dual clutch (i.e., separate traction) and power take-off (PTO) clutch, the operator has continuous application of the PTO, enhancing tillage quality without leaving untilled soil.
NOTE: 5036D is available only with a single clutch.
John Deere 5D Series Tractors have MQRL which gives feasibility of lifting implements to the intended position without disturbing the position control (PC) and draft control (DC) levers at a headland turn.
An additional lever is provided to facilitate lifting and lowering of the implement at the headland or whenever needed without operating/disturbing the PC and DC levers.
