The five John Deere factories that are in India are world class manufacturing facilities that operate with a strong commitment to security and safety standards for employees.
Amongst these, John Deere Pune Works is the first manufacturing facility for John Deere in India. This facility was established at Sanaswadi, near Pune in Maharashtra, in 1999 as a green field project. The factory was developed under a 50:50 joint venture with Larsen & Toubro Limited, an engineering company of repute from India. This state of the art tractor manufacturing plant for 5000 series John Deere tractors was developed with a vision to expand its global presence in agriculture equipment. These tractors were introduced in India beginning in early 2000. In 2005, John Deere acquired nearly all the remaining shares in this joint venture. Currently this facility manufactures 5000 series tractors ranging from 35 hp up until 75 hp capacities for both domestic as well as export market.
The Pune Works facility has been winning awards for exporting excellence for the last 12 years from the Engineering Export Promotion Council.
Spread over 112 acres, this facility is a great example of an integrated enterprise. It houses 3 manufacturing units, namely the Engine, Transmission and Vehicle factories. In addition to this it also has an in-house PV&V lab. The manufacturing units deploy world class Deere Production Systems and use the latest technology and thinking to produce quality products with superior features.
The Transmission factory is a centre of excellence for 5000 & 4000 series transmissions delivering a range of 35 HP to 75 HP transmissions across multiple platforms. Advanced CNC equipment and robust assembly processes ensure efficient production of high quality transmissions. This factory has produced more than 400k transmissions so far and continues to support
John Deere plants at PW, Augusta, China, Brazil and Mexico.
The Vehicle Assembly line is an outstanding example of complex manufacturing as it manufactures more than 200 product variants on one single line. It has a state of the art paint facility featuring the latest in modern equipment and infrastructure in the form of various DC tools, automatically guided vehicles, robotic painting and much more.
The engine assembly line is designed to produce one of the world's highly fuel efficient and powerful engines. Each station is ergonomically designed with built-in features to ensure adherence to exacting quality standards. The engines are transported during assembly on an overhead conveyor.
A leak test is conducted on a fully-assembled engine at the sub-assembly stage to ensure a 100% leak-proof engine. Pre-operation and post-operation online quality checks are also carried out to ensure quality. Critical joints are fastened using electric multi spindle machines capable of torque, yield and angle control.
Cleanliness of components is continuously maintained using special purpose washing machines both online as well as offline. Finally, every engine is tested for performance at the company's Engine Test Cells which are one of the most modern in the industry.
Highly sophisticated and well-equipped Metrology and Metallurgy laboratories support the entire manufacturing operation.
IT at the Workplace
A high level of computerization underlines the operations at John Deere India. The company is equipped with state-of- the-art computer and communication facilities, giving it the interconnectivity and interactivity imperative in today's increasingly competitive market.
The company has implemented SAP systems for sales and distribution as well as integration of manufacturing processes. Area offices, dealers, depots and C & F agents are networked to enhance efficiency and customer service.
Training is also provided periodically to employees as well as dealers to upgrade their skills and better their performance.
